The leather is soft covering the entirety of the spine as well as the edges of the journal. The gold pattern on the front is delicate looking. I was worried that the florentine pattern would look too feminine for my taste but it did not. The edges are richly gold edged (I once ordered a journal that was so lightly gold edged it looked pathetic). The pages themselves are lightly lined and there is a "Made in Italy" stamp on the inside.
Overall the journal is small (as described?) but is a respectable Italian journal for use. It's an excellent gift as well (perhaps with a nice pen).
Once I run out, I will probably buy the map/writing version of this book. Shipped fast. No complaints.
